Distinctive Unit Insignia

Description

A gold metal device 1 3/16 inches(3.02 cm) in height, consisting of a snake coiled in the shape of an eternity knot Or, entwined around a medical cross, Sanguine, surmounted by a Roman sword throughout with the hilt behind the head of the snake, all of the first. Below the device a gold scroll inscribed SERVAMUS VINCIMUS in Infantry blue letters.

Symbolism

The snake often is a symbol of regeneration, rebirth, or transformation since it sheds its skin. Here it alludes to the prior history of the 411TH HOSPITAL CENTER as the 411THMEDICAL CONCETRATION CENTER, and is now represented by the Yellow Rat Snake, which is indigenous to Florida and is known for aggressively eliminating disease vectors harmful to humans. This snake likes water, is a good swimmer, and likes to hunt from strong cypress oaks, which is symbolic of the units location on the St. Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida. The snake is also a traditional symbol of healing coming from Asclepius, the god of medicine and healing, who carried a staff with a snake coiled around it. The image of a snake in a circular knot swallowing its tail (Ourogoros) is a symbol of eternity. The Roman Centurion sword is a symbol of combat, as the Romans were known for their aggressive military conquests. The Maroon medical cross represents the on going mission of aid and healing at the 411THHOSPITAL CENTER. The motto in Latin Servamus Vincimus translates to We Save We Conquer.
